Eastern Market History
Eastern Market has served Detroit well for over a century. It wasn’t always called that, though.
Eastern Market was originally known as The Farmer’s Market in Detroit when it opened in 1841. That’s over 150 years ago…and counting! During that time, when it was originally located in Cadillac Square, only hay and wood was sold. In 1891 more sheds were added and a location change was made to the northeast of Detroit’s downtown area.
Overtime, sales have expanded into other consumer goods and the stalls were redesigned. The market presently covers 43 acres and is the largest historic public market district in the United States. Not only is it a place that serves the community needs, but also hosts tailgating for Detroit Lions football games. Over 45,000 shoppers visit Eastern Market on Saturday’s.
When you say Eastern Market, you think of that brick facade as you walk up to the entrance of the building. We created a shade of eyeshadow that was inspired by that view of Shed 2.

Discover More of Michigan
Eastern Market will always have a special place in my Michigan-bred heart. It is very much an important staple of Detroit as far as health, business, and community goes. This organization proved their staple standing even further by their efforts to provide during the trying months caused by COVID-19. How’s that for commitment to the community!
