Dearborn: A City of Dreams, Success, & Simplicity
Dearborn: A City of Dreams, Success, and Simplicity
Everyday thousands of people bustle to work in the city that is home to some of the top companies, such as the Ford Motor Company, Carhatt, LaFontaine, Al Wissam, and more. It’s also home to the smell of fresh baked bread and desserts as you hear the native languages of small business owners, many of whose families have been here since the early twentieth century. The same city boasts the longest running full time bird research station in North America, documenting the sightings of 250 species of birds. And in between the companies and headquarters are wide open fields of sunflowers and soybeans that a variety of birds, bees, butterflies, foxes, and other animals call home.
So what is this city that so well portrays the American Dream, highlighting the nation’s urban accomplishments, while also preserving its natural beauty?
Dearborn: Birthplace of Henry Ford
Dearborn, MI, a city in the metro Detroit area in Wayne County, is the birthplace of Henry Ford, the person who put the “world on wheels”. But that’s not the city’s only first or exclusive distinction.

Adding to Dearborn’s allure is that not only is it an urban hotspot as obvious from the above, but it’s a city that’s highly in touch with it’s natural side. Henry Ford, though the father of the auto industry, was a fan and strong proponent of nature and his love for the natural reflects throughout the city to this day. The Henry Ford Estate consisted of 1,300 acres of land that included his residence, a greenhouse, an electric power plant, a boathouse, gardens, and natural areas of which 300+ acres are now used for environmental research at the University of Michigan - Dearborn. The natural areas include a floodplain, lake, part of the Rouge River, meadows, and beech-maple and other forests. Research activities include bird watching, beekeeping, conservation, maple sugaring, and more. The estate grounds feature Clara Ford’s infamous Rose Garden, which at one point consisted of 350 varieties of roses! The Rouge River Dam, also located on the grounds of the Henry Ford Estate, serves for an absolutely gorgeous and picturesque morning or evening stroll.
