Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes: A Day Trip Itinerary

There are so many beautiful wonders to explore throughout the United States, but the sand dunes in Traverse City are definitely one of the most memorable. A person does not walk away from such a splendor without reminiscing on the tranquility and beauty that the sand dunes hold. As of 1970, they have been recognized as a National Lakeshore by the National Parks of the United States. Being a part of such an organization ensures their preservation for years to come, keeping them natural and inspiring for all who visit.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is the official lakeshore name, though the actual dunes stretch much farther than just the brief entrance areas of the surrounding parks. The best place to be to start a day trip to the dunes is Traverse City.

The dunes extend along the coast of Lake Michigan, whose bays are permanent residences of the beautiful city of Traverse. There are endless ways to enjoy a day with such excitement in store, in the prime location that it's at, so we've gone ahead and made it easy for you by putting together an original itinerary. Don't feel obligated to remain within its borders though, as the north coast has bountiful enjoyments to offer at every stop sign, nature preserve, and local business you might find yourself at.

Rise and Shine!

Waking up in the beautiful, serene Traverse City is delightful enough, but let’s not forget what the day ahead has in store. If you're up north, don't miss seeing the morning sun reflecting off the bay (whether right in TC or if you're lucky, out on Old Mission Peninsula).

There are too many amazing places to grab a good breakfast in this area, so don't take the easy route and swing by Denny's or Bob Evan's. Be adventurous and try out local hubs like the Flapjack Shack, The Brew, Red Spire Brunch House, or Green House Café. These restaurants are popular with the locals, preferred by the returning tourists, and offer numerous dishes to meet most anyone’s dieting preferences. Sit down and start planning for the day ahead with your troupe.

Preparation For Your Sand Dunes Daytrip

Once the crew has been fueled and is ready to start the adventure, it's time to head out! Not too fast though- do you have everything you're going to need for a day-long trip to Empire and Sleeping Bear Dunes? Let’s go over the essentials, instead of running back inside three times before taking off. Make sure you have a bag that doesn't require your hands, first of all. Secondly, fill that bag with non-toxic sunscreen, natural insect repellent, lip balm, water, a few snacks (almonds, energy bar, dried cherries, whatever floats your boat), and swimming gear just in case you're enticed and can't resist. Then, of course, there will be your wallet, phone, and basic YOU essentials- so save room for that too!

You’re going to want to dress for the expedition as well. There will be lots of sand, sun, and water involved, so be prepared. Water-resistant shoes are the best, as they usually allow you to not wear socks and remain comfortable (this is nice with all the sand and water that may make its way into your shoes). Wear shorts and a short-sleeved shirt but bring a light sweater along for the trip. Northern Michigan is not California, no matter how much it can feel like it at times. The evenings are chilly, and there is a chance the breeze may get the best of you even before the sun goes down.

Beginning the Journey to Sleeping Bear Dunes

Now that you are locked and loaded, it's time to get on the road! Utilize the wonder of our world, and "maps" your way to Pierce Stocking Drive. I believe this to be the best starting point for such a sight-seeing, venture-full trip.

Sleeping bear is beautiful from this point, standing atop the lookout platform. From here you can get a real sense of what you're up against for the hours ahead. At this point, it shouldn't be any later than 11 am if you're pacing yourself efficiently. Take in the view, the air, and the journey to come, as what lies ahead is all of that and more.

Hiking the Sand Dunes in Traverse City

I hope you brought your “staying-active” attitude because this next part of the trip is a bit demanding. There are a few options, though, depending on what sort of hiking experience you and your crew may have.

Sleeping Bear Point Trail

The first one that I highly recommend is Sleeping Bear Point Trail, as it is satisfying in both lengths and lavishes. The views and natural aesthetics are awe-inspiring from every twist and turn. It is also a good choice as it is only 2.5 miles, making it manageable for those who aren’t out on their feet more days than not.

Pyramid Point Loop

Another option for this sort of challenge is the Pyramid Point Loop, which is only .3 more miles than the Point Trail. This one is a little more enjoyable as it takes you directly to the tip-top of some of the most beautiful of dunes.

Empire Bluff Trail

If you are looking for something a little simpler, check out the Empire Bluff Trail, which maxes out at 1.5 miles and is well-reviewed as more comfortable than the average hike. Don't think you're missing out by taking the shorter trek either, as this trail provides exquisite views and absolutely astonishing natural landscapes just as much as the other two.

Alligator Hill Trail and Platte Plains Loop Trail

If all of this sounds a bit too basic, though, there are two other prominent trail systems for Sleeping Bear Dunes that I personally run through and agree with the best of backpackers that they are both a challenge and elevating in mindset. Alligator Hill Trail is best used if you plan to trail run, as its length is a bit exhausting as a simple hike- 4.7 miles. The same goes for the Platte Plains Loop Trail, sitting at a general distance of 5.3 miles. Both of these offer views, wildlife, and all the vast greenery found in the outdoors of Northern Michigan.

General Sleeping Bear Dunes Hiking Information

Keep in mind that each of these hikes and all the others are not PURELY sand dunes. They include the serene scape that hides in the background of such a unique place just as much as the lakeshore. Expect to travel through marshes, beautiful woodlands, fields of wildflowers, and thickets that hide away exotic birds and berries that thrive in the natural splendor of the Leelanau peninsula.

Travel information for these hikes is available through numerous websites, though I do believe that the National Park Service site is the most reliable. Read through some testimonials and check out some pictures with the All Trails application if you are still feeling uncertain. It is easily downloadable right to your phone or available on the browser.

Glen Arbor Adventures

Once you’ve made your mark on the land, get out of the woods and explore the town of Glen Arbor! Around the time you reach the city limits (which is only about 10 minutes from most exit points of Sleeping Bear Dunes), it will be lunchtime. I'll direct you to some of the fan favorites for appetizing destinations in Glen Arbor to make it quick and easy since I'm assuming everyone is quite hungry at this point. There is Boone Dock's and Art's Tavern if you're hoping for something comfortable and quaint.

Where to Eat in Glen Arbor

Boone Dock's has outdoor seating, which draws in a lot of the tourists. After hiking outside for the better half of the day, though, I'd expect you will want some refreshing AC regardless of the options. There is also Western Ave Grill if you are hoping for a more exquisite dining style, but I recommend this restaurant for dinner over lunch.

Shopping in Glen Ardor

Once you’re done enjoying the fine dining of Glen Arbor, it’s time to take to the streets. There are quite a few shops in the town that have gathered much attention over the years. The first and foremost of these businesses is The Cherry Republic. Famous for the obvious reasons, there is something inside their doors for everyone- salsa, candy, coffee, and even wine! Northern Michigan is the cherry capital, but Glen Arbor is where the fame of it all began.

Once you’ve gathered your cherry souvenirs, head to one of the many Michigan shops that stock Northern Nail Polish and Northern Apothecary products. These products are made by women and minority-owned small businesses and are sustainably made and often vegan. Find the closest shop to you here or you can find the perfect souvenir online and enjoy wandering and exploring without the pressure of shopping and carrying bags.

A Satisfying Sky – Traverse City Dunes at Sunset

It is finally time to set forth the steps that will lead to the whole point of this long, lavishing day. You saved the best part of the expedition for the later hours, just to catch the beauty of evening clouds radiating the rays of the northern sunshine. The dune climb is ahead, and trust me, it is worth the work.

Ensure you have your gear for the expedition- sunscreen, water, and something to get a good picture! The one thing you won't want, though, is shoes. Some people press through the climb with their sneakers or sandals, but trust me, it is a lot more manageable the old fashion way. Regardless of your decision, keep a pair in your pack just in case- the terrain is susceptible to change along the way.

This is probably going to be the most challenging part of the entire trip, but once you get to the top, you'll realize why it is worth it. You can reach the dune climb at the north end of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. Follow the guided trail system and stay away from the ridges of the dunes. This is a big mistake that more people make than should be the case. The peaks are affected by erosion and pose as a threat to travelers. Stay within the safe areas!

Once you are lucky enough to reach the top, take a moment to appreciate the journey that brought you to such a wondrous place. The view of Glen Lake is impeccable, but the way the air feels against your skin is something that cannot be described in words. I have found some of the most enchanting clarity standing in the spot you’re planning to travel to. I do believe the feeling will be and has been replicated again and again for all others who plant their feet in the same sand.

Take on the challenge, and complete the dune climb to cap off your great adventure. Be sure to take it easy on your way down, as there are quite a few steep slopes. Upon reaching the dune's base, stop by The Dune Center to utilize the restrooms and check out the bookstore!

Fine Dining and Fresh Water

I suggest stopping by the Western Ave Grill for dinner, as it offers a relaxing environment and refreshing drinks to help soothe the senses after such an eventful day. They also provide indoor and outdoor seating, which can be nice if there is a slight breeze and patrons enjoying the downtown area. If you already checked this restaurant out for lunch or can't find something delicious on their menu, stop by one of the other suggestions in the article or ask a local. The dining in Glen Arbor is comfortable and casual, with some serene lighting and lots of laughter. I guarantee you will find something that fits your fancy!

Sand Dunes That Steal Your Heart

Glen Arbor is such a beautiful town with a lot to offer its residents and those who take the time to explore its wonder- Sleeping Bear Dunes national lakeshore. The sand dunes of Traverse City are, in fact, located a bit north of the city limits, though don't be deterred by the distance between one place and the other. Northern Michigan is spread out- a lot different from that of the interstates and expressways most people are used to. Enjoy the winding roads, fresh air, and let the sand dunes steal your heart!
