Fall into Mindfulness: How to Savor the Season with Nature

Fall into Mindfulness: How to Savor the Season with Nature

The leaves are starting to turn, the wind has picked up, and the temps have dropped—it’s autumn in Northern Michigan, and it’s the perfect season to get outside and savor the natural world around you. From an invigorating hike through the woods to a leisurely paddle on clear waters, there are plenty of ways to enjoy nature this fall. Here are just some of the ways you can be mindful when enjoying autumn in Northern Michigan (and beyond).

1. Lay in the grass and gaze at the clouds or the stars. Don't be afraid to take a 10 minute nap

Spending time outdoors every day helps you unwind from the stresses of the day and reenergize with fresh air, sunshine, and natural light. Spending time in nature can also help you feel more connected to your surroundings, which is something we all need during this busy season.

2. Take a walk with a friend

— but only talk about what you want to. If needed, remind them that this moment is saved for positive self care.

3. Read your favorite book on the porch

(even if it's one that you've already read)

4. Go into the woods

Explore and get in touch with yourself by focusing on all of your senses (what do you see? What do you smell? What do you hear?). Take in a deep breath and smell the crisp autumn air of leaves.

5. Paddle down a river

Take a leisurely paddle along the riverbank of a small lake or down a river.

6. Pick flowers

Put them in a vase next to your bedside table or desk so they are there to greet you when you wake up or return home from work.

7. Start a leaf collection scrapbook

Collect nice looking leaves and press them inside the pages of a scrapbook.

8. Drink tea outside

Maybe on the patio or deck, looking out onto the yard/street/neighborhood.

9. Sit outside at night

…if it’s safe to do so, and listen to crickets or waves crashing against shoreline while trying not to think of anything else besides those sounds.

I’ve always loved fall, especially when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate the beauty of nature in autumn for more than just its aesthetics—I also find myself taking a step back from the stress of everyday life and falling into mindfulness. I hope you’ve enjoyed these nine ways you can enjoy fall in all its glory while staying mindful this season.
